Overlays
Concrete overlays can provide a solution for several problems with existing concrete surfaces. If the
concrete that has become brittle and chipped or flaked off it can be repaired with an overlay. Perhaps you
have a floor with minor humps and valleys that need to be leveled. Maybe you have an old concrete slab that
having to remove and replace the existing slab.
Most concrete overlays are polymer modified which means they contain polymer resins along with cement and
aggregates. The polymer resins increase the strength, performance, and durability of overlays. They can be
applied as thin as 1/16 inch up to several inches. Stamped or textured overlays need to be a minimum 1/4 inch
to receive the imprint. Overlays can be colored or tinted by the same processes used with regular concrete.
Overlays have become more common as the products have improved. We typically use an overlay to prepare
an old surface for decorative treatments such as stain or texturing, or it can be applied to just clean up the old
uneven surface and make it look new again. Overlays can also be used over a plywood sub-floor to provide a
surface for stain or texture. This makes a great cost effective flooring option for entries, foyers, kitchens and
bathrooms.
